History

The history of the Hernia Center starts in 1989 with Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck's wish to enter new territory in the field of hernia surgery. Today, the Hernia Center Munich is the largest European center exclusively specialising in hernias of the abdominal wall and groin region.

In 1989, Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck started optimising the surgery of abdominal wall hernias, both with respect to the surgical procedure as well as patient management in the scope of the research project "Day Surgery" at the TU Munich clinic Rechts der Isar.

The method of choice was that of the Canadian surgeon Dr. Edward Earle SHOULDICE using local anaesthesia. The entire environment was restructured in such a way that the patients come to the clinic in the morning and may already return home in the evening after surgery.

At the end of 1993, Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck took up residence in her own medical practice as surgical specialist and since then has worked exclusively in the field of hernia surgery.

This was the actual birth of the Hernia Center Munich. Until today, Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck has successfully operated more than 12,000 patients. Each year, the total number of surgical procedures increases by more than 1,400. This makes the Hernia Center Munich the most successful institution in Europe and the second largest clinic worldwide specialising in hernia surgery besides the Shouldice Hospital in Toronto-Thornhill, Ontario, Canada.

Some new surgical methods were developed at the Hernia Center Dr. Muschaweck in the past years. The two most important ones are the "Munich Repair" of umbilical hernias and the so-called "Minimal Repair" method. Due to the gentle surgical technique this method is especially suited for top athletes.

These two additional surgical methods have created an even broader basis for "Tailored Surgery" and enable the individual and custom-tailored treatment of each patient. With "Tailored Surgery", the surgical method is carefully selected among several methods under consideration of the age, profession, general health and physical activity of the patient and the size and severity of the hernia.

With the use of a quality management system and the certification of the Center pursuant to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 in April 2000, Dr. med. Ulrike Muschaweck intends to document the high quality standard, ensure it in the long run, improve it constantly and demonstrate it to the public.

Dr. Andreas Ungeheuer has been working as additional medical specialist for surgery and partner in the Hernia Center Munich since October 2002.

In August 2008 the Hernia Center Dr. Muschaweck started a cooperation with the private hospital Döbling in Vienna. Prof. Matthias Kux is performing surgeries there, regularly.
